GRAND HOTEL ABYss (2019/Graz)

In collaboration with Daniel Mann und Eitan Efrat, specifically, alongside a video installation produced by them, I designed a gneiss steaming stone; a metaphor of humankind’s tendency toward polluting comfort. In mirroring its natural counterpart on the other side of the window in Forum Stadtpark, it engages us with questions of waste, comfort, and indolence. Like a ball, this stone interacts subjectively. In being the sort of stone one can find in the radioactive spas of the region, it mimics nature. The sculpture is a machine that converts electricity into steaming culture. Whatever this culture is and however superior it claims itself to be, it is a mere construction that, over time, often reveals itself to be a farce. It performs the shortsightedness of abstraction.
